Response for Chapter 1 of The Tiger Rising

In the book The Tiger Rising the author engaged me by using lots of descriptive sentences and words. For example "sullen" and "waiting for him like chained and starved guard dogs, eager to attack". It brought out a sort of dark feeling which is interesting because most authors have this light tone to their books. But not Kate DiCamillo. It seems like she's not afraid to bring out darkness and sad into a children's book. Because after all, The Tiger Rising is a children's book. That's what I really like about this book.

My prediction is that the blonde girl with the pink frilly dress will become friends with Rob ( the main character in the story). I think that Rob will find out the tiger belongs to the girl and that she can ride him. I can't really imagine what would happen after that.

  1. Nadia, you are very perceptive. I like your impressions of Kate DiCamillio. You're right--she writes as is she is not afraid to bring out those dark feelings. Not a lot of children's authors do this.
